BIKE AND SAFETY GEAR

Safety Gear: Protect Yourself While Racing

BMX racing can be fast and exciting, but accidents can happen. To keep yourself safe, we recommend wearing the following protective gear:

  • Full Face Helmet: A must-have for full head protection during races and practice.
  • Full Fingered Gloves: Protect your hands and improve grip on the handlebars.
  • Long-Sleeved Top: Helps protect your arms from scrapes and scratches.
  • Long Pants or Padded Shorts: Provides extra protection for your legs and knees. Padded shorts are a great choice to minimize impact.
  • Enclosed Shoes: Closed-toe shoes with good grip are essential for safety and control.
  • Elbow, Knee, and Body Armour: Recommended for added protection, especially when you're learning or racing on more challenging tracks.

We also offer a limited number of full-face helmets, gloves, and safety pads during training and club nights, so you can give them a try before committing to purchasing your own.

Selecting the Right BMX Race Bike

Choosing the right BMX bike is just as important as your gear. The bike should match the rider's size and skill level for the best racing experience. We recommend speaking with club members for advice and trying out different bike sizes on the track to see what feels comfortable. Here’s a helpful guide based on rider height:

  • Micro Mini (18"-20" Wheels): Ideal for kids under 5 years old and those shorter than 120cm.
  • Mini (20" Wheels): Best for riders between 115cm and 135cm tall.
  • Junior (20" Wheels): Suitable for riders who are 130cm to 145cm tall.
  • Expert (20" Wheels): For riders between 140cm and 160cm tall.
  • Pro (20" Wheels): Designed for riders who are 155cm to 175cm tall.
  • Pro XL, XXL, XXXL (20" Wheels): Perfect for taller riders or those who prefer a longer frame.
  • Cruiser (24" Wheels): Typically for adults, but available in Junior, Expert, and Pro sizes for riders who prefer a larger frame.

The right size bike ensures a more comfortable and effective ride, especially during races where handling and speed matter most.

By using the right safety gear and selecting a bike that fits your size, you’ll be ready to enjoy the thrill of BMX racing with confidence. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to reach out to our club members—they’re always happy to offer guidance!
